Has anyone had wrist surgery

I am contemplating wrist surgery, total wrist replacement. I've discounted fusion of the wrist as an option. Any advice or insight?

  1. I have had carpal treatment, five other joint replacements, and I go to physical therapy twice a week for my wrists/hands. I can tell you from the experience of all that that joint replacement has come a pretty long way these days. My, personally, even after hips I was home within three days and they have been great for years. Hopefully someone who has had wrist replacement can comment and fill in the the rest of the blanks! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

    1. Thank you so much DPM for responding. TSA must hate to see you coming. (LOL). I love your 'you can't slow me down' attitude.
As you well know, making the decision to have surgery (any surgery) weighs on you. Did you try other approaches (ie, Cortisone shots, Hyaluronic Acid, etc.)? I'll do PT. I figure it can't hurt.
Not sure what my next steps will be. I am taking a step back to assess my options (meds included). So your response means a great deal to me.

      1. Hi . I can't personally speak to the replacements, but did a little research that I thought you might find helpful/interesting. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common cause of wrist replacement surgery, so the surgeons who do this procedure should be used to working with RA patients (osteo is the leading cause for knees and hips). Also, I found this page from the Mayo clinic that discusses the fact that fusion is the most common procedure, but that some have issues with mobility limitations that come with it. Most interesting though is that it cites research that compared the two procedures and found a higher complication rate for the fusion surgery: https://www.mayoclinic.org/medical-professionals/orthopedic-surgery/news/wrist-replacement-an-option-for-advanced-arthritis/mac-20431493. In addition, this other article has a great discussion with a number of surgeons about wrist replacement, including limitations, improvements to the artificial joints, changes still to come, and overall outlook: https://www.healio.com/news/orthopedics/20211109/advancements-in-wrist-arthroplasty-may-improve-results. It seems to be really great information for having a discussion on where they are with the technology with any doctor you may be considering using. As you were saying to Daniel, the decision on replacements is not an easy one and totally get exploring the treatment options, but hope this information can help you explore the options. As a side note: my wife, Kelly, and I are friends with Daniel and, like Daniel, she was diagnosed very young and has multiple replacements. She wrote this article on replacements and her decision process on doing or not doing more: https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/living/joint-replacement-surgery. Wishing you the best and feel free to ask further questions or keep us posted on how you are doing. Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)

        1. Whew! This is great feedback. I've got some reading to get done asap. Thank you so very much Richard. I can't wait to dive into these articles. I will definitely keep you posted. And Please thank your wife for me as well. That is why I joined this site, experienced input is the best kind.

          1. Hi . Thank you so much for the kind words. A big yes back to you on the power of community. I can tell you that for Kelly, having grown up with RA with nothing like this site around, this place is greatly appreciated. Best, Richard (RheumatoidArthritis.net Team)
